OG Refresher Course

As a self-employed educator and dyslexia interventionist, I know well the importance of keeping on top of my own professional development. While working as a teacher I saw too often how colleagues would fall into a state of statis, where they would cling to old information they'd learned from teaching college or methods that had seemed effective to them in the past.

While experience and past education are certainly strong assets for an educator to have, it's imperative to continue educating oneself in one's field. Like doctors and lawyers who have to continually work to stay current in their field's body of knowledge and innovative methodology, so too do educators. This is especially true for those specializing in dyslexia and other learning differences. There is a wide body of knowledge and technique available in the field of dyslexia intervention, and I always work to keep on top of it.

I recently took an OG refresher course from The Reed Charitable Foundation- an organization dedicated to educating educators about literacy intervention. The course was divided into 3 parts: "Spelling Rules and Syllabication", "Reading and Spelling Through the Lens of Speech to Print", and "Planning and Executing an OG Lesson".

While most of it was review and already being well practiced through my student sessions, I did pick up a few new tips and tricks along the way. I learned, for example, an easier way to teach the c vs. k rule to students.

Overall, I enjoyed taking the OG refresher course through The Reed Charitable Foundation and will keep my eye out for further professional development opportunities offered by them. The next course I will be working on is one offered through Yale University via Coursera by Sally Shaywitz, authour of Overcoming Dyslexia- a book I am well familiar with.

I would recommend both the book and the course to anyone who is looking for a good base knowledge about dyslexia. Links below:
